Exit/M&A

◾ Italy-based legal tech startup, Lexroom, has recently closed two acquisitions, as reported today, September 8, 2026, in a post by Artificial Lawyer (AL).

From AL’s post:

“Italy’s leading legal AI company, Lexroom – which raised $50m in a Series B round this summer – has acquired French legal tech startup Query Juriste, and also Bulgarian Praven Intelekt, in its first ever inorganic deals.

“Following its expansion into Germany and Spain, this move ‘marks a new phase in Lexroom’s European growth strategy, combining organic growth and M&A to scale its AI operating system across Civil Law markets, bringing its footprint to five European markets, including Italy,’ they said.”

Fundraising

◾ Magnar, a legal tech startup based in Santiago, Chile, closed a Series A round yesterday, September 7, 2026, as reported in a post from Legaltech News (LTN).

From LTN's post:

"Santiago, Chile-based legal artificial intelligence startup Magnar announced Monday the completion of an $8 million Series A funding round. The round was led by 6 Degrees Capital and co-led by Hi Ventures, with additional participation from FEN Ventures, Platanus Ventures, Nascent ventures, Chilean law firm Carey and Argentinian law firm Beccar Varela.

"The Series A brings total outside investment in the company to $8.8 million."

◾ The opening paragraph of Artificial Lawyer's (AL) fundraising-related post says a lot:

"Harvey has announced a $550m funding round at a $15.5B valuation, co-led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners. It has also bought San Francisco-based Guardrails AI, an AI security platform for agents."

My take: A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money!

Hiring/New Hires

As Legatech News (LTN) reports, veteran legal tech innovator, Evan Shenkman, has joined Barter + Brunelle as a partner.

Legal industry advisory firm Baretz + Brunelle announced on Tuesday that it has added legal technology pioneer Evan Shenkman as a partner in New York, after a 25-year career exclusively in law firms.

"Shenkman arrives at Baretz + Brunelle after seven years at Second Hundred firm Fisher & Phillips, where as chief knowledge and innovation officer, he was a pioneer in deploying generative artificial intelligence across the firm's global platform."

$$Quote:

"In his new role, Shenkman will advise legal technology companies, law firms and corporate law departments on designing, monetizing and implementing technology and data-based innovations that help with growth.

". . .Shenkman will also counsel law firms and legal departments on technology selection and change management."

Investing

◾ Artificial Lawyer (AL) has posted about the emergence from stealth of GCVC, a new venture fund that will focus on investing in legal tech (as well compliance tech and regtech) and that, according to AL, has a limited partnership roster that includes many actively practicing enterprise general counsel.

From AL's post:

"A new legal tech fund, GCVC, has launched, backed by over fifty sitting general counsels from prominent private and public companies. Meanwhile, Wilson Sonsini is the first law firm to invest in the fund, which has just come out of stealth. It now joins the likes of The Legal Tech Fund, as specialised investors into this sector.

"LPs include current and former general counsels of Salesforce, Circle, ElevenLabs, Whatnot, Rippling and many others. They have already invested in Sandstone."

Product Development

◾ Here's a post from Artificial Lawyer (AL) describing Legora's new initiative to improve the validity of AI-driven legal research on Legora's platform by building an ontology of substantive law and a citator tool.

From AL's post:

"Legora is ramping up its legal research capabilities by offering ‘a full ontology of law and an AI-native citator’. The move follows deals with Qura and Wexler. The ontology is currently in limited beta and will be generally available in Q4.

"They explained: ‘Legora is building a full ontology of the law and an AI-native citator. Legora does this with proprietary technology from its acquisitions of Qura and Wexler, compressing corpora of thousands to hundreds of millions of documents into structured data that an agent actually can use to provide reliable output.’

"Or as they added: ‘Without a mapped structure of how legal authorities rank and relate, AI can’t fully understand every legal proposition and how it fits into the law as a whole.’" (emphasis in original)

The AL post explains why Legora can't rely on legal publishing giants' data sources instead of building its own ontology and citator. And for that discussion read the entire AL post here: https://www.artificiallawyer.com/2026/09/14/legora-to-launch-ontology-ai-native-citator/

Purchasing/Using Legal Tech

◾ Here's a post from community member, Topaz Turkenitz, a co-founder of Vespper:

"Hey all, I'd like to introduce you to Vespper
We launched the best DOCX MCP in the market to allow AI agents to edit Microsoft word documents.

"We maintain all the documents styling and formatting and are super simple to use.

"Come try us out today!" https://www.vespper.com/?utm_source=legaltechforstartups

◾ A practice group at BigLaw's K&L Gates made a build vs. buy decision in favor building an AI-driven application for preparing SEC N-14 forms that are filed in connection with investment fund mergers. Here, in a post at Legaltech News (LTN), is a good discussion of the process that the practice group followed.

From the LTN post:

"While the firm initially looked at using off-the-shelf software to automate the N-14 drafting process, Gilmartin said the results were not up to the standard needed for client work, in part because of the number of discrete, sequential steps involved.

"Beyond producing better outputs, he noted that building a bespoke tool also created a point of differentiation from competing law firms."

◾ Legaltech News (LTN) posted on September 10, 2026 about the release of the DELTA Benchmark Report by Legal Benchmarks.

From LTN’s post:

“Legal artificial intelligence evaluation group Legal Benchmarks announced Thursday the release of its DELTA Benchmark Report, which assessed and compared the performance of various large language models (LLMs) on a set of Dutch legal research tasks.

“The 23 tested models, including LLMs from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, were placed in a standardized harness, given more than 200 Dutch legal research tasks, and graded on a rubric containing substantive and citation criteria by attorneys and LLMs.”

Read the entire LTN post at the link below to read about (among other topics) (1) how the models that were tested performed, (2) test completion metrics, (3) price vs. performance considerations, and (4) formatting evaluations:

◾ You think some BigLaw law firms are taking this “AI thing” seriously? Well, yes indeed some are, with Bloomberg Law (BL) posting that Latham & Watkins has itself purchased Nvidia chips to fine tune models.

From the BL post:

“Latham & Watkins has purchased powerful computing chips from Nvidia that it is using to fine-tune open-weight models and provide an extra layer of security as it pursues an artificial intelligence strategy that isn’t limited to off-the-shelf tools.

“Multiple leaders of Latham’s AI strategy committee told Bloomberg Law the firm decided to develop its own Nvidia server infrastructure three years ago and has been purchasing the servers over that same time period.”

Teaching/Learning Legal Tech

From this week’s edition of the excellent The Legal Wire (TLW):

“This week, we [TLW] saw a shift in legal AI towards the practical places where legal work starts: training, search, intake, drafting, and client acquisition. Today, Wolters Kluwer announced the launch of Libra Academy to help European legal professionals use AI inside daily workflows. Earlier this week, Google’s latest search data started to give law firms a clearer view of how they appear inside AI-powered results. In Asia, Law&Company launched Lexpand AI across nine jurisdictions and eight languages, another sign that legal AI is becoming more regional, multilingual, and jurisdiction-specific.”

◾ On the teaching-and-learning-legal-tech front, Legal IT Insider (LITI) posts that Singapore Management University has joined Legora's "Legal AI Scholars Program. "

From LITI's post:

"Singapore Management University (SMU) today announced that SMU’s Yong Pung How School of Law is joining Legora’s Legal AI Scholars Program, becoming the first university in Asia to do so.

"Under the partnership, SMU’s law faculty will receive licenses and training on the platform, with access expanding to students and courses as SMU integrates Legora into its teaching."
